Centennial Ranches Honored

August 18, 2022 | Tales from the Tread

Across the nation, family farms and ranches, historic barns and other agricultural sites are disappearing at an alarming rate. Colorado and Routt County’s ranching and farming families have weathered and survived numerous challenges including the pressures of growth and development, changes in farming methods, drought and economic conditions. By persevering, these families have helped to preserve important pieces of our state and county’s commercial and cultural history. For over 25 years, History Colorado and the Colorado Department of Agriculture have recognized the important role that agriculture has played in our state’s history and economic development through the Centennial Farms program at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo. The event is on Aug. 26 this year. Centennial Farms or Ranches specifically are honored when the farm or ranch has belonged to the same family for at least 100 years, has a minimum of 160 acres or gross at least $1,000 in annual sales, and the farm or ranch is currently a working farm or ranch.

Pioneer Wagon on Display

August 04, 2022 | Tales from the Tread

The Sam Utter family left Tracy, Iowa, in the fall of 1900 with nine people and two wagons. The family included my Grampa Sam, Gramma Louise and their seven kids, plus one on the way. They traveled to Pawn Creek, Oklahoma where Sam found employment constructing bridges for the highway department. Travel was slow and dangerous on the journey to Oklahoma and then on to Routt County, but they were determined and persistent in achieving their goal of settling in a new frontier. When they got to Denver there was too much snow on the wagon roads to get over the mountain passes, so the family stayed in Denver that first winter and grandpa got a job in a livery stable. Grandpa Sam had heard that Steamboat Springs was being settled, but there were still homesteads available. So, after the snow melted and they were able to start traveling again, they left Denver with the two covered wagons, two teams of horses, the mule, and now eight kids.

The architects of Steamboat: A historical perspective

April 22, 2021 | Tales from the Tread

When Steamboat Springs was settled in the late 1870s, there were no local professional architects or builders. Pioneers built simple cabins using native logs, handmade wooden shingles and locally quarried stone. Soon, the town was beginning to grow. The first local sawmill opened in 1883. Photographs from the 1890s show most buildings were constructed using milled wood. Over time, business owners wanted more substantial, fireproof buildings. The first Routt County brick kiln opened in 1886.
