Ski jumping competition medal awarded to Carl Howelsen. Howelsen won this medal in 1920 in Dillon, CO.
Howelsen, a Norwegian stone mason and ski jumper known as the Father of Skiing in Colorado, started ski clubs in Denver, Hot Sulphur Springs, and Steamboat Springs. He resided in Steamboat Springs from 1913 to 1920 where he built the first ski jumps on Howelsen Hill, started the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and Winter Carnival, and instilled a love of skiing and spirit of competition that would ignite the Steamboat Springs community. Shortly after winning this medal, he returned to his home in Norway to help care for his parents.
