Local Steamboat Activities & Current Events

The tread of Pioneers museum always has interesting and educational activities going on. Our tours, exhibits, and special events are always free; however, our exhibits and events change according to season. If you are looking for what to do in Steamboat, check in with us from time to time or become a member and stay informed on upcoming activities. All ages and families are welcome.

Pioneer Days at the Historic Mesa Schoolhouse
Location: Mesa Schoolhouse
Friday - 06/16/2017, 1:00pm- 3:00pm
Wednesday - 07/19/2017, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Join us at the historic Mesa School (33985 Hwy 40) for pioneer activities and crafts for kids ages 5 and up with adult. Activities include a Mountain Man demonstration showing how these rugged men of the past survived in the wilderness, a spinning wheel demonstration showing how wool goes from sheep to sweaters, including a hands-on drop spindle spinning activity, and candle dipping. Co-sponsored by the City of Steamboat Springs.


Ghost Mine Driving Tour to Oak Creek
Monday - 06/30/2017 - 9:00am-12:00pm; FREE
oin historian, Jim Stanko, as he recounts the history of the ghost coal mines as we travel by bus along Hwy 131. In Oak Creek, we’ll tour the Tracks and Trails Museum. Space is limited so RSVP to Candice at cbannister@treadofpioneers.org or 879-2214 by June 24; fee: $25 for adults/non-members; $20 museum members; $10 children under 12.

4th of July Pioneer Day Block Party
Tuesday - 07/04/2017, 11am-1pm; FREE
Don’t miss this favorite 4th of July tradition. After the 4th of July parade on Lincoln Ave., come to the Tread of Pioneers Museum and enjoy a free community concert, kids’ activities, our famous Routt Beer Floats, and free museum admission for all.

Downtown Historical Walking Tour
Summer 2017: June 29 - August 31, 2017, 9:00am-10:30am
Starts at the Tread of Pioneers Museum, 800 Oak St. This easy guided walking tour highlights the historic buildings of downtown Steamboat Springs and unveils detailed stories of the town's founding and early settlers. Participants walk to and learn about the original town square, power plant, newspaper building, courthouse, and more. Receive $1 off admission to the Tread of Pioneers Museum.

Olympic Heritage Walking Tour
Summer 2017: Tuesdays starting June 27 - August 29, 2017, - 9:00am-10:30am
Starts at Olympian Hall/Howelsen Hill Lodge at Howelsen Hill, 845 Howelsen Pkwy. This guided tour explores Steamboat’s Olympic heritage; the multiple talents of Carl Howelsen; and the history of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, Winter Carnival, Howelsen Hill, and ski jumping. Receive $1 off admission to the Tread of Pioneers Museum.

Mineral Springs Walking Tour
Summer 2017: Wednesdays June 28 - August 30, 2017
Starts at the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts at the Depot on 13th St. Find out about the curative properties of the springs and why Steamboat was slated as a world-class spa destination. Join a Yampatika naturalist on this easy walking tour to find out which salty spring the animals loved, how the Steamboat Spring was named, and much more. Receive a coupon for $1 off admission to the Tread of Pioneers Museum.

Step back in time! Tour the historic Mesa Schoolhouse (33985 Hwy 40) and experience student and teacher life at the turn-of-the-century in this one-room schoolhouse. Learn about historic toys and recess games, Routt County school history, and much more.

Lulie Crawford's Wildflowers and Watercolors Kids Program
Location: Yampa River Botanic Park

Join us at the Yampa River Botanic Park to explore our area’s wildflowers and create your own watercolor painting of them, just like Lulie did when she was a child. Historic Places Bike Tour
See historic Routt County by bicycle! Simply download the historic places self-guided bike tour guide (created by the City of Steamboat Springs) and learn about the Seventh Street District, the Mesa School, and many more places then go see them for yourself!
Daily Treasure Hunt for Kids
Kids use the treasuer map to answer clues and riddles about artifacts at the museum. All children get to choose a prize from the treasure chest upon completing the treasure hunt. A fun and interactive way to learn about the history of Steamboat Springs.
School Tours and Programs
School tours and special programs are a large part of the activities at the Tread of Pioneers Museum. Museum staff tailor our school tours to the state required curriculum. We also offer children's programs and events throughout the year.
