Looking for what to do in Steamboat? The Tread of Pioneers Museum offers something for everyone. Experience the rich heritage of Steamboat Springs through our ever- changing exhibits, tours, special events, and more. become a member to receive program and event invitations and support our efforts to preserve and share the heritage of the Yampa Valley.

Guided Tours & Events

The museum offers three guided tours in the summer that take place throughout the Steamboat Springs community- Downtown Historical, Olympic Heritage and Mineral Springs (with Yampatika) Tours. Visit local historic landmarks and learn more about the fascinating heritage that makes Steamboat Springs a one-of- a-kind destination.

Starts at Olympian Hall/Howelsen Hill Lodge at Howelsen Hill, 845 Howelsen Pkwy. This guided tour explores Steamboat’s Olympic heritage; the multiple talents of Carl Howelsen; and the history of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, Winter Carnival, Howelsen Hill, and ski jumping. Starts at the Tread of Pioneers Museum, 800 Oak St. This easy guided walking tour highlights the historic buildings of downtown Steamboat Springs and unveils detailed stories of the town's founding and early settlers. Participants walk to and learn about the original town square, power plant, newspaper building, courthouse, and more. Receive discount admission to the Tread of Pioneers Museum.

Lulie Crawford's Wildflowers and Watercolors Kid's Program

Location: Yampa River Botanic Park
Join us at the Yampa River Botanic Park to explore our area’s wildflowers and create your own watercolor painting of them, just like Lulie did when she was a child. Step back in time and tour the historic Crawford home. Built in 1894, the stately stone landmark at 1184 Crawford Avenue was the home of Steamboat’s founding family, the Crawfords.
Tours will begin on the half hour starting at 4:00pm–
last tour begins at 5:30pm. No RSVP– space is limited

Sponsored by the Tread of Pioneers Museum and Historic Routt County.


Pioneer Days at the Historic Mesa Schoolhouse

Location: Mesa Schoolhouse
Join us at the historic Mesa School (33985 Hwy 40) for pioneer activities and crafts for kids ages 5 and up with adult. Activities include a Mountain Man demonstration showing how these rugged men of the past survived in the wilderness, a spinning wheel demonstration showing how wool goes from sheep to sweaters, including a hands-on drop spindle spinning activity, and candle dipping. Co-sponsored by the City of Steamboat Springs.


Daily Treasure Hunt for Kids
Kids use the treasuer map to answer clues and riddles about artifacts at the museum. All children get to choose a prize from the treasure chest upon completing the treasure hunt. A fun and interactive way to learn about the history of Steamboat Springs.


School Tours and Programs
School tours and special programs are a large part of the activities at the Tread of Pioneers Museum. Museum staff tailor our school tours to the state required curriculum. We also offer children's programs and events throughout the year.
