Kidd learned to ski race in Stowe, Vermont. He skied for the University Vermont of the Mountains ski team. In the 1960's he attended the University of Colorado, receiving a degree in economics, and became a member of the US ski team from 1964-1970. During these years he placed 8th in slalom and 12th in giant slalom as a FIS competitor in 1962. Kidd was the first American male alpine racer to win an Olympic medal, a silver medal in slalom and a bronze in the Alpine combined in 1964 at Innsbruck. He also was the U.S. National giant slalom champion that same year. Kidd was America's first gold medal winner in men's skiing in Val Gardena, Italy at the FIS World Championships in 1970. Shortly after that he turned pro and became the first American to win both Amateur and Pro World Championships in a single year (1970). Both titles he won within a two-week time period. Kidd was inducted into the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 1986.
